Nasa scientists braced for 'solar tsunami' to hit earth

The earth could be hit by a wave of violent space weather as early as Tuesday after a massive explosion on the sun, scientists have warned.

The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards.

Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.
Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.
Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.
It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.

"This eruption is directed right at us," said Leon Golub, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
"It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."
Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.

Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.

The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.

It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools.
Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan's orbiting Hinode telescope.

"What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing,” the UK solar expert said.

“This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.

"These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the Sun's huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.”

She added: "It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption.

"Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds.

“This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes."

A Nasa spokesman was unavailable for comment.

The earthquake occurred at 16h local time. At this time a day, more people are at work and therefore more vulnerable to collapsing office buildings. During traffic hours, people can be affected by collapsing bridges and other road infrastructure.
    [IMG] Resilience and Vulnerability

Resilience is the capacity of the population to cope with a hazard. Since much of investments in earthquake preparedness and available funds for quick response is related to household income, the GDP per capita can be used as a rough indicator of resilience.
Vanuatu has a GDP per capita of 1347 PPP$ (Parity Purchasing Power Dollar, about 1 Euro) and is therefore part of the low level income countries. Therefore, the earthquake happened in an area of low resilience.
Based on the combination of 9 indicators, ECHO attributes Vanuatu a medium vulnerability.

The 9-inch wave was observed off the capital Port Vila, where buildings shook and power lines were downed by the 7.5 magnitude quake. "It was quite a significant earthquake, and we're still having a few aftershocks," said Ben McKenzie of the New Zealand High Commission by phone from Port Vila. The quake hit about 25 miles northwest of Port Vila at a depth of 22 miles , the U.S. Geological Survey said. The four-story office building housing the New Zealand High Commission suffered some damage, said Mr. McKenzie, first secretary at the New Zealand diplomatic post. Office shelves and ceiling tiles fell down and computers were "thrown across the office" by the jolt, he said. "We're trying to ensure everybody is safe and we're evacuating the building" to check that it's not "structurally damaged," he said. Telephone lines in Port Vila were cut by the quake, and there were several power outages, Mr. McKenzie said.

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the moment magnitude scale struck on 10 August at 16.23 (local time), approximately 24 miles (39km) west-north-west of the capital Port Vila, at a depth of around 22 miles (35km). The tremor shook buildings, damaged power lines in the capital and triggered a tsunami wave of 0.75 feet (23cm). Aftershocks were also recorded. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, and the tsunami alert issued after the initial tremor was lifted. As a precautionary measure, the authorities have advised people in the archipelago to temporarily relocate to higher ground.
    Comment and Analysis
Although the earthquake appears not to have led to any serious disruption, additional aftershocks – depending on their severity – have the potential to cause casualties and further damage. This could in turn lead to disruption to essential services, including telecommunications, power and water supply. Ocean swells and large waves of varying intensity and height are also possible in the event of further tremors.
The region is prone to earthquakes, most of which occur far from populated areas and deep under water. An 8.2-magnitude earthquake on 30 September 2009 struck approximately 110 miles (180km) east of Hihifo, in the Tonga archipelago; up to 70 Samoan villages, on the southern coast of Upolu island, were destroyed by a resultant tsunami wave. At least 110 people were killed, 150 injured and an unknown number of people, including nationals of New Zealand, Australia and the UK, reported missing following the disaster.

The earthquake occurred at 6h local time.

Ecuador has a GDP per capita of 1418 PPP$ (Parity Purchasing Power Dollar, about 1 Euro) and is therefore part of the low level income countries. Therefore, the earthquake happened in an area of low resilience.
Based on the combination of 9 indicators, ECHO attributes Ecuador a low vulnerability.

The earthquake occurred at 6h local time.

Guam has a GDP per capita of 0 PPP$ (Parity Purchasing Power Dollar, about 1 Euro) and is therefore part of the unknown level income countries. Therefore, the earthquake happened in an area of unknown resilience.
Based on the combination of 9 indicators, ECHO attributes Guam a low vulnerability.
    Secondary effects

    Probability of secondary effects:

    • [IMG] Landslides: The maximum slope in the area of the earthquake is 0% and the maximum altitude is -1206 m. Since this is a low slope, the risk of earthquake induced landslides is low. Note, however, that the slope data is not reliable on a local scale, while landslides depend very much on local topography, soil and meteorological conditions.
