A Public Works employee was killed Monday in White House as he was trying to clear debris from a long culvert that carries stormwater under the yard of Roy and Yvonne Mitchell. "It stops up occasionally, and all that water goes out in the street," Roy Mitchell said Tuesday. "It floods my yard and the yard next door." He said he spoke briefly with the workers who came on Monday to unplug it. "Next time I looked out there were emergency vehicles everywhere," he said. He didn't see the accident, but volunteer firefighters borrowed four of his shovels as they attempted to free 48-year-old John Bosch, of Castalian Springs. "They worked frantically out there," Mitchell said. "There was a group of them out there just digging like mad." In Franklin County, near Estill Springs, Melvin Hambrick, 79, died when he was pinned under a mobile home overturned by a tornado on Monday afternoon. The man's daughter, Linda Carter, was transported by air to a Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition, Franklin County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Chris Guess said. Truck driver William Stewart, 58, of New Hope, Ala., was driving on rain-slick Interstate 24 at Murfreesboro on Monday morning when he rammed the back of another rig. That rig had braked because of a traffic backup from an earlier crash, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report.

And in Polk County, 76-year-old Richard Fletcher died when a huge tree crashed through the roof of his mobile home. West Polk Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Lofty said Fletcher was seated on a sofa inside the trailer when his body was found on Monday. The tree had not hit Fletcher but it had trapped him, Lofty said. Although Fletcher had only minor visible injuries, he was on oxygen and had medical issues. Lofty said the death was being classified as weather related. The storms also caused flooding in Knoxville, where heavy rain swelled a creek behind the warehouse of the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. "Within an hour and a half, we had six feet of water in our parking lot and two feet in our warehouse," said Elaine Streno, the executive director of the food bank. "Our warehouse is closed. The food that was on the floor is contaminated," she said on Tuesday. An inch of two of mud remained in the warehouse when the water receded. Six employees who were out picking up food donations in Second Harvest trucks returned to find their personal vehicles had been inundated. Streno said of the vehicles, "We watched them spin around and couldn't help." The organization serves 18 counties in East Tennessee.

The thunderstorms produced 5000 lightning strikes since 11pm (AEST) on Tuesday, with more than 16,000 homes losing power, electricity company Energex said. The worst hit suburbs were in Brisbane's north and around Logan. 'Most of the lightning strikes went all the way to the ground,' an Energex spokeswoman said. Only 418 homes still waiting to be reconnected at 6am (AEST) on Wednesday, she said. More storm activity could be on the way for Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast later in the evening, the Bureau of Meteorology warns. Senior forecaster Peter Otto told AAP the thunderstorms were about 12 hours earlier than expected. 'In terms of lightning it looked pretty spectacular but ... it didn't quite hit the mark in terms of being a severe thunderstorm,' he said. 'From what I'm seeing in the gauges, it wasn't incredible rainfall. It was of the order of 50 to 60mm in an hour in some parts.' A police spokesman said a large fallen tree had to be cleared from the Pacific Motorway at Eight Mile Plains. An emergency services spokeswoman said there had been no calls to the State Emergency Service (SES) as of 6am (AEST). 'None at this stage, but as people wake up they might find they need us,' she said.
