Of the 7,000 fishermen that were swept into the Andaman Sea during a tropical storm on March 14-16, a total of 3,374 have now been rescued, according to a source close to the Myanmar Marine Fishing Association (MMFA).
The remaining 3,700 are still missing. Nearly two weeks since 400 fishing vessels were overturned or destroyed in 70mph winds, little hope remains of anyone else surviving.

“There are currently about 400 fishing vessels at sea trying to rescue survivors of the storm,” said the source. “So far, more than 3,700 fishermen have been rescued and brought to Rangoon.”


Burma's state media reported on March 22 that naval ships, large fishing vessels and local fishing boats had jointly rescued 3,374 fishermen. While 3,152 have already gone home, 222 fishermen remain under government care, the report said, adding that the rescued fishermen had been provided medicine, clothes and food.


The tropical storm occurred off the Irrawaddy delta coast close to areas such as Bogalay and Laputta which were severely hit by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008.


“We already listed 7,000 people as missing at sea along with their vessels,” said an official from the Botahtaung Thanlyin naval compound. “But that figure does not include those people living in littoral areas. So the number of dead may be higher.”



He and other navy officers confirmed that more than 200 bodies had already been recovered from the sea.
“The majority of boats that were overturned were carrying local fishermen,” said the MMFA source.



“Fishing vessels from Rangoon are generally larger, stronger and better equipped to resist the storm.”
Naval sources have estimated that the majority of missing fishermen are from Irrawaddy Division and Mon State.


State press reported that the Total E & P Myanmar Co. was involved in the rescue process. The company compensated each storm survivor with 20,000 kyat (US $20), medicine, clothes and other personal supplies, and arranged transportation for them.


However, a Rangoon-based journalist told The Irrawaddy that he was refused permission to talk to the survivors. “We [several Rangoon reporters] tried to talk with the storm refugees, but were not allowed.
The authorities sent them home right away. They even sent guards to accompany them to make sure they went straight home.”


State-run Myanmar Alin reported on March 13 that 100 houses and 38 huts in Rangoon and 20 houses in Irrawaddy Division were destroyed by the torrential winds.


Burma's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported on March 14 that the region would experience heavy winds and rain with some thunder and lightning, but did not predict the tropical storm.

In Cleburne, a fire in the 1200 block of Westhill Road was believed to have been caused by wind or lightning, said Keith Scarborough, assistant chief of operations for the Cleburne Fire Department. As the storm moved northeast, Waxahachie, about 30 miles south of Dallas, was hit by straight-line winds of about 80 mph. John Rodgers, Waxahachie Fire Department battalion chief, reported "sporadic structural damage all over the city," with the roofs of several businesses downtown blown off and the roof of a hotel north of the city showing damage. About 2:30 a.m, a tornado with winds of about 100 mph hit the north side of Forney, 18 miles east of Dallas. Four homes received what City Manager Brian Brooks called "significant damage" to their roofs, and a large truck stop sign was toppled. A tornado with winds estimated at 100-110 mph hit near the Cash community, about 40 miles northeast of Dallas. Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks told the Greenville Herald-Banner that six to eight homes were destroyed or severely damaged in the community of about 50 residents. As day broke, 92,000 power outages were reported, mostly in Waxahachie and Cleburne, Oncor spokeswoman Megan Wright said. That number was lowered to 40,000 by 9 p.m., Wright said. Trees damaged in the wind brought down many of the power lines, Wright said.

Situation: Twenty-two people were killed and more than 80 injured by tornadoes and severe storms that struck at least 20 counties in North Carolina Saturday, state officials said Sunday. The fatalities occurred in Wake, Johnston, Cumberland, Harnett, Lee, Bertie and Bladen counties, said Julia Jarema, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. The worst-hit area appears to be Bertie County, where authorities say 11 people are dead. About 75 people are going from door-to-door looking for victims and survivors Sunday. Several of the dead were all from one family, Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb said. Raleigh authorities confirmed that three family members died in the Stony Brook North mobile home park, off Brentwood Road. Residents said they saw two young children trapped underneath large trees and fear the children are dead. Cumberland County authorities said that one person died on Vault Field Road in Linden. The National Weather Service received reports that three people died in Bladen County, two around Broadway in Lee County and one died on Juniper Church Road near Benson in Johnston County. Some of the 80 people who required hospitalization suffered severe injuries, Jarema said. Marine officials said that a child was seriously injured at Camp Lejeune and flown to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Cumberland County authorities said they treated 50 people at field clinics and took 35 to local hospitals. Seven people were injured in Sampson County.

Chinese authorities say at least 17 people have been killed and scores injured after violent thunderstorms lashed parts of the country's southern industrial heartland of Guangdong province. Emergency service officials say hail, rain and gale-force winds struck the province's capital, Guangzhou, along with the nearby cities of Foshan, Dongguan and Zhaoqing. Victims were struck by falling objects and collapsing walls and work sheds, 118 people were reported injured. The region is home to much of China's crucial export manufacturing sector, although there was no immediate indication of serious damage to assembly lines.
