However, the intimidating natural beauty also carries a risk. On August 8, 2010, unusually intense monsoon rains triggered devastating landslides and floods that buried a densely populated area in the center of the city. As of August 17, China’s official news agency reported 1,270 deaths with 474 people still missing. This detailed image, from DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-2 satellite, shows the largest slide in the lower part of the city on August 10.
The slide terminates in a brown fan that extends into the Bailong River. Mud surrounds several of the buildings near the river’s edge and branches into adjacent streets. Some of this mud may have been deposited by flood waters that gathered behind the slide as torrential rain continued to fall. In the large image, which shows a wider area, the dark waters of Bailong River seeps around buildings across from the slide and up the wide road that runs along the river’s edge not far from the slide.
Moving away from the river, the mud has a rougher, more varied texture where the slide channeled through the center of the city. The smooth dark spots are probably water. Light-colored flecks are probably debris. The slide area widens again in the lower right corner, clearly covering blocks of buildings.
Slightly darker than the surrounding mud, streams snake across the surface of the slide. The large image reveals that the landslides followed the course of streams down the mountains and into the valley where Zhouqu was built. On the far right side of the large image, closer to the top of the slide and beyond the right edge of the web image, farmland surrounds the streams. The steep slopes on either side of the streams are bare of vegetation, possibly making them prone to landslides.

The Ethiopian rainy season, which often starts by mid-May, ends by mid-September, with some parts of the country getting rains as early as February and April. In the past few weeks, the heavy rains resulted in the deaths of several people, with thunder and heavy winds causing power interruption in and around Addis Ababa, home to around five million people.

In late May, water finally began flowing over a spillway designed to lower the rapidly rising water level and avoid a catastrophic outburst flood. Geologist David Petley at the International Landslide Centre reported that the lake level had evidently stabilized by July 6.
The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured these natural-color images of the landslide lake. The images show an area upstream from the spillway, after water began flowing over it. The top image shows the lake right after its water level reportedly stabilized, on July 7, 2010. The bottom image shows the same lake several weeks later, on August 23, 2010.
Northeast of Hussaini, the water level has dropped noticeably. On July 7, water fills the channel roughly 1.5 to 2 kilometers upstream from the town. On August 23, the channel appears mostly empty roughly 1 kilometer upstream.

    Number of Deads: 42 person(s)
    Number of Injured: 13 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 60 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 24000 person(s)

    Situation:

At least 42 people have died in mudslides that followed heavy rains in Guatemala, local media reported Sunday. Fifteen people were killed in one mudslide alone on the Pan- American Highway near Guatemala City. According to eyewitness reports on Sunday, numerous other people had been buried. Rescuers searching for survivors reportedly were caught and submerged in new mudslides. By late Sunday, at least 21 bodies had been recovered. Officials said the Pan-American Highway is impassable, blocked by mudslides in several areas. At least 24,000 people have reportedly been evacuated. Rains, floods and mudslides have affected 30,000 people in different regions of the country, with 10 rivers threatening to overflow. The heavy rains caused flooding in neighbouring Central American countries and southern Mexico, killing dozens of people over the last few days. Forty people had been reported dead in Nicaragua by the weekend and 20 dead in Honduras.

It was almost hard to believe your eyes when you see just how massive the boulders are that stopped just short of leveling several homes. The slide sent several trees crashing into a trailer. Tons and tons of rock from the side of a mountain behind their trailer, had broken off and crashed to the ground, sending trees into their home. Somehow his son was able to escape with only a few scratches. But Jordan Wade says if his little boy hadn't stayed with his grandmother overnight, it might have been a different story. "Most likely he would have been up already, running around the house. He most likely would have been killed or hurt real bad," says Jordan. Huge boulders blocked the creek, so crews are now having to pump the water around it until it can all somehow be cleared. Now the road above the rockslide is closed because crews are afraid the highway is unstable. But that may cause even more problems, because Highway 1144 is the main road to Lee County Schools. In the meantime, about 50 people who live off Silver Creek Road will have to find somewhere else to live until the mess can be cleaned up. Jordan Wade may have lost his home for good, but at least his family survived. "I'm tickled nobody got hurt," he says. As for what might have caused this, officials say to think about what may have caused all those potholes on the roads. It's similar in Lee County. Crews say a lot of ice likely built up in that rock and these last couple of days of thawing out, the ice melted and that rock became very unstable. Officials also say there are some old mines in the area. There is an alternate route to school so at this point it looks like Lee County school are on schedule for Monday morning.

A large-scale land subsidence occurred at a mining area in Ezhou City of central China's Hubei Province on the early morning of Monday, resulting in a 5,200-square-meter hole in the ground. The incident did not cause any casualties as production at the site was halted at the time and the workers all had gone home for the Spring Festival holiday, the Hubei-based Chutianjinbao newspaper reported. The land subsidence involves three shafts at the Datongkeng mining area in Ding'ao village, Tingzu Township. The pit, measuring 80 meters long, 65 meters wide and 40 meters deep, was most likely formed as a result of mining activities that had hollowed out the ground from below, the report quoted experts as saying. Police have cordoned off the periphery 100 meters around the pit. Fissures were detected in fields on the hills and other mining shafts near the site of the subsidence. A man on duty near the site surnamed Li told the newspaper that he saw a strong air current blasting egg-sized rocks out of the shaft around 8.40pm Sunday with sounds resembling train steam whistles. Local residents also reported that they were awoken from sleep by extremely loud sounds and tremors. Meanwhile, the local government is making plans to evacuate local villagers whose homes had developed cracks, partly due to the overdrafting of groundwater by the mining shafts. The Tingzhu Township government has sealed the road leading to the site and put in place a round-the-clock monitoring squad, the paper said.

OROFINO, Idaho -- A large landslide has taken out a stretch of the Dent Bridge Road in Orofino, Idaho.
The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office said the slide is about 70 feet long and deep. Dent Bridge Road is the main connector between Orofino and Elk River.
Due to the slide, the road will be closed indefinitely. Officials said plans are in place for ambulance service to the impacted areas. Law enforcement is contacting neighbors to inform them of the situation.

A massive landslide in the southwestern department of Cauca destroyed several homes on Monday though there are no reports of any casualties.
The landslide struck the village of La Playa in the rural area of Tacueyo after the Palo River burst its banks. Two hundred families were evacuated prior to the disaster.
Speaking to Caracol Radio, Mayor Carlos Alberto Banguero of the neighboring municipality of Toribio said, "We know nothing yet about personal misfortunes but we hope that there are none. It has been raining heavily in the region and we are without power."
The landslide is said to be moving toward the areas of El Palo and Guachene, forcing officials to advise inhabitants to leave their homes in order to avoid any casualties.
This is one of several natural disasters to have occurred over the last few days with five people having been killed in the southwest department of Nariño on Monday and a further four in Medellin on Sunday.
Authorities in large parts of the country are on the highest alert for landslides and floods after last year's rainy season killed 310 Colombians.
