    Situation Update No. 1
    Posted:2011-02-01, 04:13:28 [UTC]
    Ref.no.: TC-20110201-29384-AUS

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2011-02-02 at 04:07:11 [UTC]

    Event: Tropical Storm
Location: Australia State of Queensland North-eastern coastal areas

Situation: Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) is advising residents between Cape Melville and Sarina and extending inland to Croydon and Richmond to finalise their preparations as Cyclone Yasi nears the coast. At 8am the Bureau of Meteorology issued a cyclone warning, which advised north Queensland residents that Cyclone Yasi would cross the coast near Innisfail around midnight. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is a large and very powerful tropical cyclone and poses an extremely serious threat to life and property within the warning area, especially between Cairns and Townsville. Coastal residents within the warning area, particularly between Cairns and Ayr, are specifically warned of an extremely dangerous sea level rise as the cyclone approaches, crosses the coast and moves inland. The sea is likely to steadily rise up to a level which will be very dangerously above the normal tide, with extremely damaging waves, strong currents and flooding of low-lying areas extending some way inland. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible, and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by authorities. Residents in the affected areas should finalise their cyclone preparations NOW by: Securing animals and loose outdoor items and disconnecting all electrical items. Filling buckets and bath with water in case water supply becomes restricted and ensuring you have sufficient water purification tablets to make the water drinkable. Ensuring windows fitted with shutters are closed securely. Other windows should be taped in a criss-crossing fashion using strong packing tape. Remaining indoors, keeping their emergency kit close and seeking shelter in the strongest part of the house. Ensure your Emergency Kit is complete and easily accessible If the building you are sheltering in starts to break up, immediately seek shelter in the smallest room of the house, under a strong table, bench or heavy mattress. Beware the calm eye of the cyclone. Stay inside until you've received official advice that it is safe to go outside and heed all advice given by authorities. Keep listening to your local radio and watch the BoM website www.bom.gov.au to monitor the movement and severity of the cyclone.
