Tail length of comet Elenin exceeds 900 000 km

[IMG] March 12th, 2011 | [IMG] Author: LeonidOS

[IMG]Gustavo Muler

Many of the readers of this blog have already seen the latest images of comet C/2010 X1. On them, the tail of the comet extends all of 1 minute of arc. Is the comet’s tail actually small or is it simply an optical illusion? For my calculations I used Gustavo Muler’s picture which he obtained March 7. Unfortunately before opposition of the comet, we were not able to get an image with any large telescopes – the camera on the two-meter Faulkes Telescope North (FTN), went off-line.
As such, we’ll return to the image we have. On approach to opposition, when the comet, Earth, and Sun are lined up (that is, the C-S-E angle is close to 180°), the comet’s tail is practically hidden from view for the Earthly observer, as the tails of the comet are pointed away from the Sun. At the time the image was taken, we saw the tail at an angle of 2.75°! Taking the length of the projection of the tail as one minute of arc, and solving the triangle, we see the actual length of the tail has already exceeded 900,000 km! Although, in fact, the tail has to be still bigger, as Gustavo used a 30-cm telescope, knowing that if he had photographed the comet with a two-meter telescope, we would have seen fainter fragments of the comet’s tail.
If, on March 7, we had been able to see the comet’s tail in profile, its length on the image would have been in excess of 10 arc minutes. Right now, the comet is approaching opposition, and we have a good chance of getting images of the comet’s coma. Maybe we can also do that on large telescopes.

How To Make A 72-Hour Emergency Backpack

monday, 21 march 2011 00:00

Thousands of our readers have put together this 72-Hour Emergency Backpack since we first published it in 1993 and with the increase of natural diasters this might be a food time for our members to review their emergency preparedness program.

1 backpack - water resistant
1 canteen of water (replace periodically, to keep fresh)
1 package of water purification tablets
1 whistle
1 “Swiss Army” pocketknife
2 road flares
2 33-gallon heavy-duty plastic bags (in an emergency, these can be used for: ground covers, makeshift shelters, waterproof storage containers, or cut a hole in the center of one, at the bottom, for a waterproof poncho)
6 camper food meals dated (usually these have a 7-year shelf life)
1 Johnson & Johnson Auto First Aid Kit
1 Boy Scout Handbook
1 AM/FM radio, with an extra set of long-life batteries (test periodically)
2 candles
1 box of waterproof matches, and a “Bic” lighter
1 bottle of liquid antiseptic soap
1 toothbrush and toothpaste
100 feet of 1/4” nylon rope
1 small waterproof flashlight, with extra batteries
$50 in cash — 3 tens, 3 fives, and 5 ones
1 pad and pencil
6 “Kleenex” tissue packs, pocket size
1 compass
1 folding shovel
1 sharp hunting knife, with sheath
1 mess kit, utensils, and Sterno fuel
1 roll duct tape
1 hatchet
2 bungee cords
1 cup
1 emergency thermal blanket
1 bottle/pak potassium iodide tablets

These items are “basic” necessities. You will need to review your families needs and add to this list.

Because the first 72 hours of any disaster are the most crucial, having this kit in an emergency can literally save your life. Since I built my first backpack kit back in 1992, several items have come in handy time and again — the duct tape has been used for everything from fixing radiator hoses to holding a makeshift splint together. I designed the kit to be carried in the trunk of our family’s vehicle, where it can be accessed either at home or on the road. My vehicle also has a ham radio installed giving me access to emergency communication. You may not be a licensed ham radio operator but you can still have emergency communications using a Citizens Band radio — Radio Shack is a good source for CBs.

As a result of the recent nuclear disaster in Japan we have added potassium iodide tablets to our list. Your local drug store or super stores like Walmart may carry them or you can check online with companies such as Amazon.com.

Most items listed below can be purchased at any sporting goods store, or at discount stores such as Wal-Mart. The items included below are designed for one person or for a family with the exception of the food and water, which are sufficient for one person. You may need more than 1 backpack depending on the size of your family and you may need to alter your own checklist, to better fit your family’s special needs.

Pole Shift

monday, 01 february 2010 13:23

What Could Possibly Cause the Dramatic Changes Illustrated on This Map?

In the mid-twentieth century, Russian scientists discovered numerous woolly mammoths in the frozen tundra. Carbon-dated to eleven thousand-five hundred years ago, the animals contained undigested grass in their mouths, an indication that a cataclysmic event froze them instantly as they grazed. Something happened quickly. Not in years or thousands of years, but in hours or minutes. Core samples from this period indicate that Earth’s magnetic pole moved abruptly. I believe this is what caused the great changes in weather patterns that ended the Ice Age and caused sea levels to rise more than 300 feet. I also believe a pole shift was responsible for frigid air being sucked out of the arctic areas and into temperate and tropical areas, causing winds in excess of two hundred miles per hour. The result was hundreds of feet of snow that froze everything in its path. It is also estimated that 90 percent of the world's species became extinct during this same time period. It is now 11,500 years later and humankind is once again poised on the brink of another cataclysm.

Pole Shift

The Earth does not rotate perfectly on its axis. It wobbles in very specific cycles. One such cycle is known as the Precession of the Equinoxes (see my book, "Notes from the Cosmos" for more on this) and takes 23,000 years to complete a grand cycle. At the midpoints of the cycle — 11,500-year intervals — great stresses are placed on the planet and the wobble increases. I liken it to a washing machine that is out of balance in the spin cycle. It eventually begins to shake. This imbalance will cause a shift in the lithosphere — a pole shift. I do not see this resulting in Earth tumbling in space; rather I see the lithosphere slipping over the core and other Earth layers. From the perspective of one standing on Earth looking skyward, the Sun would appear to move quickly across the sky some 90 degrees. In reality the entire crust would have slipped over the magma layers it floats on. Once the shift has occurred a new North Pole would be established at approximately 110 degrees East Longitude and 45 degrees North Latitude — in the area of the present day position of Mongolia.

Human Factors

I believe that a pole shift will be the ultimate cause of the cataclysmic changes illustrated on this map. However, other factors such as global warming, nuclear activity, and the misuse of technology will act to increase the melting of the poles, thereby throwing Earth even further out of balance and intensifying the development of a pole shift. As the pole shift scenario builds and a melt-off in the poles continues, we will eventually see the displacement of people, and wars fought over water and resources.

In the end two wild cards, Nature and Human Consciousness will determine the severity of changes. An increase in our awareness of the Oneness of all Creation and of the sacred trust we have been given to protect Nature can modify what I present here. Always keep in mind, no forecast or prediction is absolute as long as free will exists.

<hr style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" size="1"> Huge Asteroid to Pass Near Earth in November

Leonard David, SPACE.com Space Insider Columnist
Date: 06 April 2011 Time: 10:10 AM ET

Mark your calendars for an impressive and upcoming flyby of an asteroid that’s one of the larger potentially perilous space rocks in the heavens – in terms of smacking the Earth in the future.

It’s the case of asteroid 2005 YU55, a round mini-world that is about 1,300 feet (400 meters) in diameter. In early November, this asteroid will approach Earth within a scant 0.85 lunar distances.

Due the object’s size and whisking by so close to Earth, an extensive campaign of radar, visual and infrared observations are being planned.

Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered by Spacewatch at the University of Arizona, Tucson’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory on Dec. 28, 2005. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]
En route and headed our way, the cosmic wanderer is another reminder about life here on our sitting duck of a planet
Close and big
“The close Earth approach of 2005 YU55 on Nov. 8, is unusual since it is close and big. On average, one wouldn’t expect an object this big to pass this close but every 30 years,” said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Yeomans said that with new radar capabilities at Goldstone in California — part of NASA’s Deep Space Network — there is a good chance of obtaining radar imaging of 2005 YU55 down to the 5-meter resolution level. Doing so, he said, would mean obtaining higher spatial resolution of the object than that attained by recent spacecraft flyby missions.

“So we like to think of this opportunity as a close flyby mission with Earth as the spacecraft,” Yeomans told SPACE.com. “When combined with ground-based optical and near-infrared observations, the radar data should provide a fairly complete picture of one of the larger potentially hazardous asteroids,” he said. [5 Reasons to Care About Asteroids]

Asteroid 2005 YU55 is a slow rotator. Because of its size and proximity to Earth, the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., has designated the space rock as a “potentially hazardous asteroid.”

Dishing it out
“We’re already preparing for the 2005 YU55 flyby,” said Lance Benner, a research scientist at JPL and a specialist on radar imaging of near-Earth objects. He said part of the plan is to observe the asteroid with radar using both the huge Arecibo dish in Puerto Rico and equipment at Goldstone.

“The asteroid will approach from the south, so Goldstone has the first chance to observe it due to its declination coverage,” Benner told SPACE.com.
To help coordinate the observing campaigns, “Radar Observations Planning” websites have been set up for this unusual occasion, Benner said.

“This flyby will be the closest by any near-Earth asteroid with an absolute magnitude this bright since 1976 and until 2028,” Benner added. “Having said that, nobody saw 2010 XC15 during its close flyby within 0.5 lunar distance in 1976,” he said, noting that this asteroid wasn’t discovered until late in 2010.

“Thus, the flyby by 2005 YU55 will be the closest actually observed by something this large, so it represents a unique opportunity,” Benner said. “In a real sense, this will provide imaging resolution comparable to or even better than a spacecraft mission flyby.”
Radar paint
Benner said that because the asteroid is zooming by Earth so very close, radar echoes will be extremely strong. One facility at Goldstone will be used to transmit and “radar paint” the object…another Goldstone dish is on tap to snag the reflected echo of radar data.
What can radar do?
Information collected by this technique, for example, can be transformed into 3-D shapes, with surface features and spin rates identified. The asteroid’s roughness and density can also be assessed. Furthermore, radar can improve the whereabouts of the object. By greatly shrinking uncertainties for newly discovered meandering NEOs, that in turn enables motion prediction for decades to centuries.
As for seeing the asteroid with small telescopes, start getting your gear ready.
Initially, the object will be too close to the sun and too faint for optical observers.
But late in the day (Universal Time) on Nov. 8, the solar elongation will grow sufficiently to see it. Early on Nov. 9, the asteroid could reach about 11th magnitude for several hours before it fades as its distance rapidly increases, Benner explained.
Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines and has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Potentially Dangerous Asteroid Spotted Passing Earth

by SPACE.com Staff
Date: 29 April 2010 Time: 11:12 AM ET
An asteroid on the list of potentially dangerous space rocks that could endanger the Earth was caught on camera as it zoomed past our planet this month, and found to be larger than astronomers originally thought.

The asteroid buzzed the Earth on April 19 and came within 1.5 million miles (2.4 million km) of the planet. That's about six times the distance between Earth and the moon.

Astronomers used the planetary radar system on the famed Arecibo radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to spot the asteroid, called 2005 YU55, over four days starting on April 19. The photo revealed the asteroid as a half-lit space rock flying through the solar system.

"At one time we had classified 2005 YU55 as a potential threat," said Steve Chesley, a scientist with NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. [More asteroid photos.]

Chesley said the new Arecibo observations have allowed astronomers to rule out any chance of 2005 YU55 hitting Earth in the next 100 years. Additional observations will help better refine those projections, he said.

The Arecibo observations revealed some unexpected new details about the nearby space rock.
The astronomers found that the asteroid is about 1,300 feet (400 meters) in size ? about a quarter-mile (400 meters) long and twice as big as originally thought. The Arecibo telescope's planetary radar system resolved features on the asteroid down to about 25 feet (7.5 meters).
Asteroid 2005 YU55 was first discovered by astronomer Robert McMillan, of the Spacewatch detection team, on Dec. 28, 2005. And this isn't the only chance astronomers will have to study 2005 YU55.

The space rock will be back.
On Nov. 8, 2011, the asteroid will complete another trip around the sun and swing by Earth again just inside the moon's orbit. It should fly by at a distance of 191,120 miles (307,577 km), about eight-tenths the distance between Earth and the moon. The distance from Earth to the moon is on average about 238,900 miles (384,472 km).
The asteroid poses no risk of impacting the Earth when it returns next year, though astronomers will keep watching its path through space.
NASA routinely tracks asteroids and comets that may fly near the Earth with a network of telescopes on the ground and in space. The agency's Near-Earth Object Observations program is responsible for finding potentially dangerous asteroids and studying their orbits to determine if they pose a risk of hitting the Earth.

So far, the program has found about 85 percent of the huge asteroids that fly near Earth, but it hasn't been quite as good at finding rocks that are smaller. The program detected only 15 percent of space rocks that are 460-feet (140-meters) wide and could potentially cause widespread devastation at their impact sites if they hit us, according to a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences.
Only 5 percent of asteroids 164-feet (50-meters) across have been found, the report found. More funding is needed if NASA hopes to reach a Congress-mandated goal of tracking all potentially dangerous space rocks.

President Barack Obama has proposed a budget increase in NASA's asteroid-tracking program that would boost its resources from $3.7 million in 2009 to $20.3 million in 2011. The program received a $2 million increase in 2010 to support the Arecibo telescope.

Obama has also proposed sending astronauts to visit an asteroid by 2025 to study it and gather data that could help astronomers find ways to deflect space rocks before they threaten all life on Earth.
The Arecibo Observatory is part of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center which is managed by Cornell University under a deal with the National Science Foundation. Astronomers with Cornell, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and the University of Maine participated in the observing of asteroid 2005 YU55.

warning to glprs...

thre is no danger and no one says the Elenin will
fall on our heads
every one who speaks about collision with this comet
is lame or try to misinform people

We **could** face a real danger if we ( earth ) pass inside
or touch the tail, because the tail is full of organic
material, viruses-microbes, frozen for **Billions of years**
and who could survive coming down in the surface of the earth
giving birth to new illnesses or pandemics uknown to our
immunizing system and for this it could kill millions of people.

(there is a theory that the close pass of comet Halley
during WWI had bring the great suine flu pandemic of 1918
who killed many millions of people worldwide)

hi all

the object has a diameter of 5284 km
d=diameter of object
L=distance earth-object
ç= angular diameter in degrees

d=2L(tan (ç/2))

[link to spaceobs.org]

ç=2 arcsec = 0,00055555 degree [link to www.convertunits.com]
L (on 3 january 03.40 am 2011 ) 545 000 000 km
d=(545 000 000) (tan 0,00055555) we must be accurate more possible as we can !!!

d=5284 km o_O

I can give you an example

I know thats not the same thing because the object is much smaller and far but...
sun - earth distance is about 150 000 000 km
angular diameter = 0,53
sun diametre = X
X =150000000(tan 0,53)
X=1387576 km in fact the sun diameter is 1392000 km

tail+coma = 39570 km !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comet Elenin!! Connect the dots.. FEMA stocking - Come on America!

Comet Elenin!! Connect the dots.. FEMA stocking - Come on America!

[link to gatewaytoheaven.ning.com]

Elenin named after the Russian who made the discovery that seems to have slipped by the giant telescopes (yeah right). Planet X (Elenin) is currently positioned south of the solar ecliptic plane and scheduled to transition into the solar disc on March 4, 2011 for the conjunction to take place on March 15, 2011; when the pole shift is expected to take place. That conjunction takes place when the Earth passes through the gravitational gradient lines between the Sun and Planet X.

While the commentator is concerned about a 'comet' and rejected ice formations, the real danger for Planet Earth from the magnetic and gravitational forces placed upon our planet from the passing of Planet X. Imagine you have two spinning magnetized tops about to converge and share the same space, while circling the Sun. The Earth is already experiencing magnetic pole displacement and rogue ocean tides and sinking islands not to mention the disruption of the earth magnetic field used by migrating animals that are dying from being thrown off track between multiple food sources.

In other words, the extremely abnormal super storms and other weather anomalies are the direct result of Planet X racing towards the center of our solar system in anticipation of making the close turn between the Sun and Earth around 9/11/2011. I have read reports that the earth will be tipped over and turned around backwards and experience sunrises from the west for a period of days, before righting itself and eventually returning to some resemblance of a normal path and rotation around the sun.

ELEnin Things to come in 2011-12 ?? - Page 2 - The Watchman's Cry

Who is Leonid Elenin? Breaking UFO News, 4/1

Comet Elenin's discover, Leonid Elenin
No April's Fools jokes to see here, folks. This site's got plenty of bull shit as is.

Well, I'm pretty damned frustrated at all the confusion around Comet Elenin. So, I’ve temporarily steered this blog away from the UFO stuff (that will come later this week, promise!). Hopefully I can locate some semblance of a Smoking Gun.

So, I did some digging. If I could prove that the name Leonid Elenin was a concoction, I could prove that it's a codename. I discovered that Leonid Yelenin (or Леонид Еленин) does indeed exist, or did exist at some point...traces start to show up in 2008. But Leonid Elenin is a new, edited name showing up in 2010

Is he (Leonid Elenin) real? Yes, thank God. Is Leonid Elenin his real name? Not quite.

Reasons why we should not worry

-NASA says that there is no Planet X, and Comet Elenin is just another comet that will give us a nice show in October.
-Elenin is not an unusual last name
-Leonid is not all that unusual a first name
-There are a handful of references to Yelenin Leonid/Leonid Yelenin from 2009 and 2008: Referred to as Yelenin Leonid, April 2008, 2008 astronomy forum, 2009 comet site
-He is active on his blog, and chats with people regularly about the comet’s trajectory. He apparently knows Russian and English.
-There are two photos of him on the internet, one attached to an interview, and one attached to an institution he’s a member of.
-Here’s a local Russian story about the comet discovery, that gives Elenin some personality.
-Here are some 2010 quotes from him in some news stories about space events, pre comet-discovery: quote 1, quote 2
-He’s attached to real-life institutions: Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics RAS, Researcher • Jul 2009 to present, Moscow Aviation Institute, class of 2004
-His name shows up on this forum for a product, indicates he’s active on Internet – but this could be a chosen user name, too.
He has a Facebook page:

Reasons why we should worry

-The full name of Leonid Elenin translates to (in its realest, rawest form): Prophetic meteor shower from constellation LEO that peaks in November, extinction level event, Sumerian lady goddess. Of course, conveniently or inconveniently, this sums up the whole Planet X conspiracy theory in a nut shell…big planet or comet or asteroid headed our way, look to LEO, will get close in October/November…will cause mass extinctions…warned about in ancient Sumerian astronomy, planets as gods.
-Comet Elenin’s orbital path and timing is nearly identical to Planet X’s (its orbit was mapped out before the comet’s discovery), the one hinted at/warned about by the ancients and theorized to exist for over a century by modern scientists - due to Uranis and Neptune’s odd orbits. Regardless, NASA admits they don’t know Elenin’s size and there’s always a small chance it could cause damage.
-The full name of Leonid Elenin is completely original, in both Russian and English – I have found no one else with this name.
-The English name Leonid Elenin does not start showing up until March-ish 2010, when a blog is set up that eventually documents Elenin’s December discovery.
-There is no audio or video of Elenin, just two similar-looking photos, and quotes throughout articles and a few interviews.
-His name on Facebook is Leonid Elenin, not his Russian name or accurately translated English name, which he apparently used before.
-Furthermore, his Facebook page shows that he’s a fan of a lot of astronomy/comet pages (this looks forced/spam my to me). He also accepted me as a Facebook friend. I think he’s accepting all friends. This is odd to me, for a guy apparently so private.
-I’ve yet to find anyone who can verify that they’ve met him. Even interviews seem to be via text – no US media has interviewed the guy. Here’s a quote from someone who follows him on Google Buzz (Gmail contact) and Facebook, who I emailed: “Hi. I never met Dr. Elenin but I'm speaking with him by phone and by e-mail regularly”
-And from another Facebook friend, someone who’s worked at a prominent US company: “Never met the guy (if there really is a guy to meet), I friended him on Facebook because I want to know the truth, just like you guys.”
-Yelenin is an obscure amateur Russian astronomer (you have to translate a lot to find out any info), who seemed to discover Elenin almost by accident.

IDEAS AND TRENDS; CLUES GET WARM IN THE SEARCH FOR PLANET X

By JOHN NOBLE WILFORD (The New York Times); Week in Review Desk
January 30, 1983, Sunday
Late City Final Edition, Section 4, Page 20, Column 1, 987 words
[ DISPLAYING ABSTRACT ]

SOMETHING out there beyond the farthest reaches of the known solar system seems to be tugging at Uranus and Neptune. Some gravitational force keeps perturbing the two giant planets, causing irregularities in their orbits. The force suggests a presence far away and unseen, a large object that may be the long-sought Planet X. Evidence assembled in recent years has led several groups of astronomers to renew the search for the 10th planet. They are devoting more time to visual observations with the 200-inch telescope at Mount Palomar in California. They are tracking two Pioneer spacecraft, now approaching the orbit of distant Pluto, to see if variations in their trajectories provide clues to the source of the mysterious force. And they are hoping that a satellite-borne telescope launched last week will detect heat ''signatures'' from the planet, or whatever it is out there

4-3-2-1...Is this what AP was alluding to? I keep thinking of the missile launch in the movie "Deep Impact". Maybe they were moving up the launch date only to have to move it back because of technical problems? Haste makes waste sometimes....just a guess.
