<CODE>A powerful earthquake in western Indonesia killed at least nine people Tuesday, flattening hundreds of buildings and overwhelming hospitals on Sumatra island, officials and witnesses said. It was felt hundreds of kilometers (miles) away in Singapore, where some office buildings were evacuated, and in neighboring Malaysia. The magnitude 6.3 quake killed at least two young children and a teacher when a two-story building crashed onto a playground in the Sumatran town of Solok, and another woman died at a market, said police spokesman Supriadi, who goes by only one name. Town Mayor Samsu Rahim told el-Shinta radio at least five other people had died, three of them burned alive when their collapsed home burst into flames. Hospitals were overflowing with patients, many of them with broken bones and cuts. At least one hospital was evacuated, sending panicked doctors and nurses fleeing with startled patients limping behind. The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor struck 33 kilometers (20 miles) below Solok, on Sumatra's western coast, shattering windows and toppling power lines. It was followed by several strong aftershocks. "Everything in my house fell down ... a cabinet hit me," said Rahma Nurjana, a resident in nearby Padang. "My neighbor's house collapsed." The tremor and at least one of the aftershocks was felt in Singapore, 430 kilometers (265 miles) from the epicenter, forcing the evacuation of several older office buildings. In Malaysia's southern coastal city of Johor, citizens fled offices, buildings and shopping centers, eyewitnesses said.

Indonesia: Earthquake Kills 11, Causes Damage in Sumatra Island

Updated: March 06, 2007 07:12 GMT An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra on 6 March, killing at least 11 people. Scores of people have been injured.
According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 49 kilometers north-northeast of Padang in the western coast of Sumatra. The earthquake occurred at 1049 local time.
An aftershock of magnitude 6.0 struck the region two hours later.
Reports indicate that dozens of buildings in Padang have been damaged. Power, water and telecommunication services have been disrupted.
Tremors were also felt in Singapore and the western coastal areas of Malaysia. A number of buildings in Singapore were evacuated, although there was no reported damage.
There was no tsunami warning issued.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" that is prone to significant seismic activity. A number of strong earthquakes have caused significant loss of life and damage to property in Indonesia in the last three years, including the magnitude 8.1 earthquake off Aceh province in December 2004, which triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the 6.3 earthquake in Yogyakarta in May 2007, which resulted in the death of more than 5,000 people.

กรมสำรวจธรณีวิทยาของสหรัฐฯ รายงานว่า เหตุแผ่นดินไหวครั้งนี้ เกิดขึ้นเมื่อเวลา 10.49 น. ซึ่งคนในหลายๆ เมืองสามารถรับรู้ได้ โดยเฉพาะเมืองบูคิตติงกี ทางตอนใต้ของเกาะสุมาตรา ซึ่งมีรายงานการตัดไฟฟ้าแล้ว โดยเกิดในพื้นที่ภูเขา ห่างจากปาดังเมืองหลวงของเมืองอิเหนา 49 กิโลเมตร

นอกจากนี้ ศูนย์เตือนภัยสึนามิในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกบนเกาะฮาวาย ก็ได้เตือนว่า แผ่นดินไหวดังกล่าวเกิดบนผืนแผ่นดิน ดังนั้น ควรมีการประกาศเตือนภัยสึนามิด้วย

ขณะที่ยังมีรายงานว่า แผ่นดินไหวครั้งรุนแรงนี้ ทำให้เกิดความตื่นกลัวจนประชาชนต้องหนีออกจากที่พักอาศัย และบ้านเรือนในเมืองโซลก ทางใต้ของบุคิตติงกี มากมายได้รับความเสียหาย

อย่างไรก็ดี กล่าวกันว่า เหตุธรณีพิโรธช่วงเช้าวันนี้สั่นสะเทือนจนรู้สึกได้ถึงสิงคโปร์ทีเดียว แม้ว่าทางกรมอุตุนิยมวิทยา และธรณีฟิสิกส์ของอินโดนีเซียจะประเมินความสั่นสะเทือนครั้งว่ารุนแรงเพียง 5.8 ริกเตอร์ก็ตาม

ทั้งนี้ หมู่เกาะอินโดนีเซียตั้งอยู่บนวงแหวนไฟแห่งมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกพอดี ซึ่งแผ่นเปลือกโลกบริเวณนี้มักจะเคลื่อนตัวอยู่เสมอ เป็นเหตุให้มีภูเขาไฟปะทุและแผ่นดินไหวบ่อยครั้ง

ทั้งนี้ แผ่นดินไหวครั้งนี้เกิดเมื่อเวลา 17.53 น. มีศูนย์กลางอยู่ใต้น้ำ ห่างจากชายฝั่งกรุงสีโบลกา บนเกาะสุมาตราไป 105 กิโลเมตร และมีความลึกประมาณ 30 กิโลเมตร

อย่างไรก็ดี ประชาชนบนเกาะใกล้เคียงเล่าว่า รู้สึกได้ถึงแรงสั่นสะเทือนว่าค่อนข้างรุนแรง ผู้คนวิ่งหนีออกจากบ้าน แต่เพราะเหตุแผ่นดินไหวเกิดขึ้นบ่อย พวกเขาจึงกลับเข้าบ้านทันทีเมื่อกลับสู่สภาวะปกติ

นายซูดิ ซีลาลาฮี โฆษกคณะรัฐมนตรีอินโดนีเซียแถลงยอดผู้เสียชีวิตอย่างเป็นทางการล่าสุดอย่างน้อย 52 ราย ลดลงจากการประกาศล่าสุดร่วม 20 ราย โดยให้เหตุผลว่าผู้เสียชีวิตบางรายถูกนับซ้ำซ้อน
ทางด้านผู้บาดเจ็บที่เข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาลที่หลั่งไหลเข้าโรงพยาบาลจากอาการบาดเจ็บตั้งแต่บาดแผลไปจนถึงกระดูกหักยังคงไม่กล้าพักรักษาตัวในอาคารโรงพยาบาล ต้องอาศัยพื้นที่ในท้องถนนและสนามแทนเนื่องจากยังคงเกรงแผ่นดินไหวขึ้นมาอีก
อินโดนีเซียตั้งอยู่บริเวณที่เรียกกันว่าวงแหวนไฟแห่งแปซิฟิก สภาพทางธรณีวิทยามีทั้งภูเขาไฟและรอยเลื่อนแผ่นดินที่ยังไม่เสถียร พร้อมที่จะเกิดแผ่นดินไหวได้ทุกเมื่อ เหตุแผ่นดินไหวใหญ่นอกชายฝั่งสุมาตราส่งผลให้เกิดคลื่นยักษ์เมื่อปี 2547 และแผ่นดินไหวบนเกาะชวาเมื่อปีก่อน มีผู้เสียชีวิตรวมกันนับแสนคนในอินโดนีเซีย-สำนักข่าวไทย

An earthquake has struck the Warburton area in Victoria, east of Melbourne. It struck just after 1:30pm AEDT, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale.

Emergency services say there are no reports of damage to property. Environmental Systems and Services Seismology expert Wayne Peck says the quake's epicentre was at Warburton but could be felt by residents across a large area. "We've had felt reports from around the area and you'd expect an earthquake of this size to be felt about 30 or 40 kilometres away from its epicentre," he said. Rob Hardin, who lives at Somers at Western Port, was at home when the quake hit. Two moderate quakes swayed the norhteast of Taiwan on Thursday morning. Measuring 3.7 and 5.3 on the Richter scale, the jolts left no victims or damages. Both earthquakes were off the Suao coast, under the seabed.
