Situation:

A powerful earthquake killed at least 14 people in Uzbekistan on Wednesday and damaged buildings in Central Asia’s densely populated Ferghana valley, sending residents onto the streets in panic. Uzbekistan’s Emergencies Ministry, citing preliminary data, said the victims were killed when the quake destroyed their homes in several towns and villages. Residents on either side of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan reported prolonged, violent shaking in the early hours of the morning that cracked the walls of their homes. Eighty-six people were treated for injuries and 35 taken to hospital, the ministry said in a statement. In Tajikistan, one man died after jumping from his window, officials said. The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.1 earthquake had its epicentre 18 km (11 miles) underground about 42 km (26 miles) southwest of Ferghana, a city in the east of Uzbekistan close to the Kyrgyz border. “Everybody was afraid. Everything was shaking,” Dilaffrus Muminova, a Ferghana resident, told Reuters by telephone. “It lasted two or three minutes, if not more.” The Ferghana valley straddles three countries and is the most densely populated part of Central Asia, a strategic but earthquake-prone region between Russia, China and Afghanistan. The valley is a patchwork of Soviet-era borders that cut across nationalities, leaving it prone to periodic bouts of ethnic violence. Widespread poverty has also contributed to a growing trend of radical Islam in the region. In June 2010, more than 400 people were killed during several days of clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in and around Osh, the largest city in southern Kyrgyzstan. At the height of the violence, about 400,000 people fled their homes.

“God is punishing us for what we are doing,” said Ismat, a resident of the Kyrgyz city of Batken, close to the Uzbek border. He declined to give his second name. He said cracks were visible in the walls of the city’s houses, although he had not seen any buildings collapse. “People were on the streets all night. There was a lot of panic.” Tajikistan’s Health Ministry said a resident of the northern city of Khujand, Abdullo Ashparov, died after leaping from a window in his second-storey apartment during the quake. No other casualties or destruction were reported in Tajikistan. The Ferghana Valley is a major centre of cotton and silk production, and the hills above are covered by walnut forests. Another native of Ferghana, who lives in Kazakhstan, said residents of her home city had been woken by strong shaking at about 0130 local time (1930 GMT). She told Reuters, after speaking to Ferghana residents by telephone, that people had reported a loud noise before their houses were jolted. Local residents also reported the destruction of low-rise housing in the nearby town of Margilan, a silk production centre. “It’s an old town and some of the old houses have been destroyed,” she said, requesting anonymity. Independent news agency www.uznews.net quoted an unnamed resident of Uzbek town of Khamza as saying the local hospital did not have enough room to accommodate the wounded. Kyrgyzstan’s Emergencies Ministry had dispatched a team to the region to investigate damage, said Sultanbek Mamatov, a spokesman for the ministry. Damage to an electricity sub-station had cut off power to several small towns and villages, he said.

Kadamjay, a Kyrgyz town close to the epicentre, was one of the towns affected. Local resident Seitmurad Kozhoyev said by telephone that windows had been shattered and at least one multi-storey apartment block had been badly damaged. Abdulamid Borbiyev, a 42-year-old businessman from a nearby village, said he knew of no local victims but that he had seen a lot of damage to buildings. In 2008, a powerful earthquake killed more than 70 people in Kyrgyzstan. In 1966, the Uzbek capital Tashkent was flattened by a 7.5 earthquake that left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Canary Islands Government Monitors El Hierro Earthquake Swarm

The Canary Islands Government has said it is monitoring an earthquake swarm on the small island of El Hierro where in excess of 400 tremors of low magnitude have been recorded in the past four days.

On Friday, the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Government Security Canary convened the first ever meeting of the Steering Committee and Volcanic Monitoring, reflected in the Specific Plan Protection Civil and Emergency for Volcanic Risk, given what it described "the significant increase in seismic activity".

A statement (translated from Spanish) issued following the meeting outlined: "This committee met this morning (Friday) at the headquarters of the Directorate General Security and Emergency Tenerife, established after the assessment of information gathered from seismic and volcanological last July 17 by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands, the situation is total normal for the green light for the information population, activating mechanisms for monitoring and oversight needed to coordinate the actions of self civil population and information contained in the Plan."

"According to data provided by the seismic monitoring station IGN's located in Valverde, one can conclude that from the noon on July 17 there has been a significant increase of low magnitude seismic activity in the municipality of Border of the island of El Hierro. To improve the location of this activity, has deployed a seismic network densification operational since July 21 has helped increase the number of earthquakes located, and can be viewed here", the statement added.

Latest tremor activity

El Hierro, a 278.5 km2 island, is situated in the most southwestern extreme of the Canaries. The origins of the island date back some 100 million years. After three successive eruptions, and consequent accumulations, the island emerged from the ocean as an imposing triangular pyramid crowned by a volcano more than 2,000 metres high.

The volcanic activity, principally at the convergence of the three ridges, resulted in the continual expansion of the island. A mere 50,000 years ago, as a result of seismic tremors which produced massive landslides, a giant piece of the island cracked off, crashed down into the ocean and scattered along the seabed.

This landslide of more than 300km3 gave rise to the impressive amphitheatre of the El Golfo valley and at the same time caused a tsunami that most likely rose over 100 metres high and probably reached as far as the American coast.

According to ElHierro.com: "Although over 200 years have elapsed since the last eruption, El Hierro has the largest number of volcanoes in the Canaries with over 500 open sky cones, another 300 covered by the most recent outflows, and some 70 caves and volcanic galleries, notably the Don Justo cave whose collection of channels surpasses 6km in length."
