ปูม้าลอยเป็นแพในทะเลชาวประมงแห่จับวันละหลายสิบตัน ขณะที่บอกไม่เคยพบเห็นเหตุการณ์แบบนี้มาก่อน เชื่อสาเหตุอาจเกิดจากท่อก๊าซรั่ว หรือไม่ก็อาจเป็นลางบอกเหตุร้ายก่อนเกิดภัยธรรมชาติ เกรงกระทบปริมาณสัตว์น้ำระยะยาว...

เหตุการณ์นี้เปิดเผยขึ้นเมื่อ เวลา14.30 น.วันที่ 23 ก.ค.54 ผู้สื่อข่าว จ.ชุมพร ได้รับแจ้งจากกลุ่มชาวประมง ต.ปากน้ำ อ.เมือง จ.ชุมพร ว่า ชาวประมงจับปูม้าได้จำนวนมากผิดปกติ อย่างที่ไม่เคยพบมาก่อน เรือประมง บางลำจับได้กว่า 1,000 กิโลกรัม ส่วนเรือประมงขนาดเล็ก เช่นเรืออวน เรือไดหมึก ซึ่งปกติไม่มีเครื่องมือจับปูม้าได้ก็สามารถใช้ สวิงตัก ปูม้าที่ลอยขึ้นมาบนผิวน้ำได้วันละกว่า 100-500 กิโลกรัม ผู้สื่อข่าวจึงเดินทางไปที่สะพานปลา ต.ปากน้ำ อ.เมือง จ.ชุมพร พบว่า เรืออวนลากหลายลำ สามารถจับปูม้าได้ 500-1,000 กิโลกรัมจริง

นาย ชลธี คงกิจธารา หรือ ไต๋ก๋งเจี๊ยบ อายุ 55 ปี อยู่บ้านเลขที่ 11/6 หมู่3 ต.ปากน้ำ อ.เมือง จ.ชุมพร เจ้าของเรือประมง ชื่อ จ.โชคชลธี เปิดเผยว่า ตนมีอาชีพทำประมงมาเกือบ 40 ปี ไม่เคยพบไม่เคยเห็นว่ามีการจับปูม้าได้มากมายขนาดนี้มาก่อน ปูม้าปกติเป็นสัตว์ที่ชอบอาศัยอยู่หน้าดินใต้ทะเล เมื่อถูกรบกวนมันจะฝังตัวลงในพื้นทะเล แต่เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นนี้ ปูม้าทั้งขนาดเล็กขนาดใหญ่ลอยขึ้นบนผิวน้ำในเวลากลางคืน ทำให้เรืออวนลากจับปูได้เป็นจำนวนมาก ส่วนเรือประมงชนิดอื่นก็สามารถใช้สวิงตักปูม้าได้เช่นกัน แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็น ลูกปูม้า ส่วนสาเหตุที่เกิดขึ้นเบื้องต้นชาวประมงส่วนใหญ่รวมทั้งตนเองตั้งข้อ สันนิษฐานเอาไว้ว่าน่าจะเกิดจาก ท่อส่งก๊าซในอ่าวไทยรั่ว เมื่อประมาณปลายเดือน มิ.ย. 2554 ที่ผ่านมา หรืออาจจะเกิดจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงของผิวพื้นดินก้นทะเล จึงทำให้สัตว์หน้าดินอยู่ไม่ได้ ต้องลอยขึ้นมาผิวน้ำ ซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่ของหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องจะได้พิสูจน์ตรวจสอบหาสาเหตุที่แท้ จริงอีกครั้งหนึ่ง


ด้าน นายสำราญ เพชรเจียรนัย อายุ 56 ปี ไต๋เรือ ผู้ที่มีประสบการณ์มากที่สุดคนหนึ่งของ ต.ปากน้ำชุมพร กล่าวว่า สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นชาวประมงเรียกว่า น้ำเสีย ซึ่งปกติจะเกิดขึ้นบริเวณผิวน้ำ แต่ในครั้งนี้เป็นสิ่งที่แปลกมาก ที่น้ำเสียเกิดขึ้นในระดับผิวดินทำให้สัตว์หน้าดิน อย่างปู หอย และปลาหมึก อยู่ไม่ได้ต้องลอยขึ้นมาบนผิวน้ำ หรือไม่ก็อาจจะเป็นลางบอกเหตุร้ายอะไรสักอย่างหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับภัยธรรมชาติ เหมือนกับครั้งเมื่อเกิดเหตุการณ์พายุไต้ฝุ่นเกย์ สัตว์จำพวกงูจะออกมาจากที่ หลบซ่อนให้คนพบเห็นเต็มไปหมด เหมือนกับปูม้าซึ่งตามปกติปูม้าและสัตว์ทะเลหลายชนิดจะไวต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลง ของสภาพแวดล้อมสภาพอากาศเป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะหมึก ซึ่งขณะที่ปูม้าลอยขึ้นมาบนผิวน้ำ หมึกก็จะหายไปจากทะเลชาวประมงแทบจับไม่ได้เลย

ส่วน นายสมพงษ์ พ่วงสะอาด อดีตนายกเทศมนตรีตำบลปากน้ำชุมพร กล่าวว่า ชาวประมงเริ่มจับปูม้าได้มากผิดปกติเกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่เมื่อต้นเดือน กรกฎาคม ที่ผ่านมา และจับได้จำนวนมากอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน รวมระยะเวลากว่า 20 วันแล้ว ซึ่งประมาณได้ว่า ขณะนี้ปูม้าถูกจับได้ไปแล้วหลาย 10 ตัน ที่น่าเสียดายคือ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นปูม้าขนาดเล็กขนาด ประมาณ 2 นิ้วมือ ที่ติดอวนขึ้นมาด้วย ถึงแม้ชาวประมงจะแยกปล่อยลงทะเลแล้วก็ตาม แต่ก็ติดอวนขึ้นมาจำนวนมากเอาไปขายก็ไม่ได้ราคา จึงอยากจะให้หน่วยงานด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมทะเล เข้ามาตรวจสอบโดยเร็ว เพราะเกรงว่าอาจจะมีผลกระทบต่อปริมาณสัตว์น้ำในระยะยาวก็เป็นได้.

เมื่อวันที่ 23 กรกฎาคม ผู้สื่อข่าวรับแจ้งจากชาวบ้าน ม.5 ต.บางนา อ.มหาราช จ.พระนครศรรีอยุธยา ว่ามีตัวตะเข็บไต่ขึ้นบ้านจำนวนมาก สร้างความเดือดร้อนรำคาญให้กับเจ้าของบ้า จนไม่ได้หลับไม่ได้นอน จึงเดินทางไปตรวจสอบ พบว่าที่บ้านนายจุมพล สมภาค อายุ 48 ปี รับราชการครู อยู่บ้านเลขที่ 30 ม.5 ต.บางนา มีตัวตะเข็บจำนวนมากไต่ตามฝาพนังรอบๆบ้าน ฝาโอ่งน้ำ ตามซอกหน้าต่าง พื้นบ้าน และภาชนะที่อยู่นอกบ้าน โดยนายจุมพลพยามเขี่ยตัวตะเข็บที่ไต่อยู่และต้องคอยกวาดที่พื้นรอบๆ บ้านตลอดเวลา

นายจุมพล เปิดเผยว่า ตัวตะเข็บบุกบ้านเกิดขึ้นมาช่วงก่อนเข้าพรรษาจนถึงปัจจุบันร่วมเดือนเศษแล้ว เนื่องจากเกิดฝนตกติดต่อกันตลอด ทำให้ดินเกิดความชื้น ก่อนหน้านี้เคยมีตัวทากมากมายไต่ตามบ้าน พอตัวทากหายไป ก็มีตัวตะเข็บเข้ามาแทน เท่าที่เก็บกวาดเฉลี่ยแล้ววันละหลายพันตัว สร้างความเดือดร้อนอย่างหนัก ไม่ค่อยได้พักผ่อน กลางคืนนอนไม่ค่อยหลับ เพราะเกรงว่าตัวตะเข็บจะไต่เข้าหู บางครั้งนั่งกินข้าวกับครอบครัว ยังมีตัวตะเข็บตกลงมาในชามข้าวและกับข้าว ส่วนโอ่งที่รองน้ำฝนไว้ใช้ดื่มหลายโอ่งใช้ไม่ได้เพราะตัวตะเข็บลงไปโอ่ง เคยใช้ยาฆ่ามดฉีดหลายครั้งแต่ตัวตะเข็บไม่ตาย โดยช่วงเช้าตัวตะเข็บจะออกมามากที่สุด ทุกวันนี้อยู่กัน 4 คน ต้องแบ่งพื้นที่กันเก็บกวาดจนไม่ได้ทำงานอื่น อยากให้ทางหน่วยงานที่มีความรู้ในเรื่องการกำจัดตะเข็บได้เข้ามาช่วยเหลือ เป็นการด่วน และขณะนี้ก็มีหลายบ้านที่ถูกตะเข็บไต่ขึ้นบ้านเช่นกัน

Seymour, Indiana- Imagine thousands of fish literally turn up dead in a lake near your home. That's just what happened at a lake in Seymour, Indiana. So, our viewers called us asking us to get answers.

Neighbors say they've never seen anything like this before.

Stinking, dead fish giving off a foul odor and floating in the lake is what Corey Lanier and his neighbors came across this weekend

"It was just a very overwhelming...just rotten fish smell," Corey Lanier said "We could smell it across the street from the lake."

Lanier and others live near Mutton Creek neighborhood lake. It sits behind their homes in Seymour.

"As soon as we walked over, there were thousands of dead fish floating in the pond," Lanier said.

Lanier estimates 2,000- 3,000 of them.

"I've never seen this many dead fish in one lake floating," Lanier said.

Maria Hauersperger's backyard goes right up too the lake.

"At first, I thought it was that something had maybe seeped into the lake," She said "Then we found out it was just really, they died of natural causes."

Debra King, Assistant Fisheries Biologist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said many things can cause a fish kill. In this case, she thinks the heat may be to blame.

King says the higher temperatures heat the water, reducing the levels of dissolved oxygen. King said that may have stressed the fish and killed them.

King says the fish look like they are a species called Shad. That's a filter feeder fish native to Indiana rivers and streams.

"It's unfortunate, but, I think ya know....nature does take it's course." Hauersperger said.

As the clean up of the smelly mess begins, for Lanier, this phenomenon serves as a learning point

"It's definitely helped me to be more aware of taking those heat warnings seriously. Staying inside, maybe, during the hottest parts of the day. Especially if you have young children like we do." He said.

With the health of the River Murray and Lower Lake system at its best in years, the mass "fish kill" is a mystery.

Point Sturt resident Dot Ratcliffe said she was alarmed to find the problem when she went kayaking on the lake yesterday morning. "I saw them (extending) about 400m out in to the lake," she said.

"It's terribly upsetting, very distressing. There are thousands of fish washed up, something you do not want to see. I have been living here for 10 years and never seen anything like this."

Bio-security aquatic pest manager Vic Neverauskas said Primary Industries would investigate the circumstances of the fish deaths as soon as possible. Most of the fish appear to be bony bream.

"There was a "fish kill" in Milang two weeks ago associated with cold nights," he said.

"It is a natural phenomenon for bony bream. It's normal for this to happen in July and August. Until we can get someone on the ground to verify the species, which will be as soon as practical, we are unable to make further comment."

Ms Ratcliffe said friends told her they had walked from their yacht to the shoreline and were "literally walking on dead fish on the sand".

"The smell is terrible. It's a tragedy," she said.

Lower Lakes fisherman Henry Jones said it might be a natural occurrence that kills mainly bony bream after a long flood. "There is a fungus that grows in their gills and around the body," he said.

US, Higher Water Temperatures Killing Texas Fish

Humans aren't the only ones languishing in the North Texas heat.

"Everything is suffering... anything that depends on water and unfortunately that includes every single, living thing," said Larry Hodge with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

The hot North Texas weather is killing fish.

The 30+ days of extreme heat and drought conditions have led to higher water temperatures and lower lake levels. That combination depletes oxygen in the water, which the fish need to breath.

"It can get to the point where the fish actually do not have enough oxygen in the water and they will suffer," explained Hodge. "You'll first see them at the surface trying to gulp air and then eventually, if it becomes severe enough, they may die."

Farm ponds and other small bodies of water are especially vulnerable. According to Hodge, there have been some fish kills on Lake Ray Hubbard and on some North Texas ponds.

"Because they have less ability to withstand the temperature changes, because there's less water in them, so their temperature tends to go up and down faster than a big body of water," Hodge said.

Temperatures on area ponds are reaching the mid-90s and there are few things that can be done to cool the water. "If it's a small pond the pond owner can actually aerate the water by agitating the water. Anything to mix air with the water will help," suggested Hodge.

Hodge says the only thing that will really help is rain and cooler temperatures.

Roswell, New Mexico - Something mysterious is happening at Bottomless Lakes State Park. Lea Lake is closed to swimming after hundreds of dead fish started washing up on shore Friday.

An empty lake on a hot summer day is an unusual sight for Lea Lake, which is normally packed with swimmers this time of year.

"It is extremely weird to see it this empty," explained lifeguard Leonardo Granados. "Even on weekdays there's still quite a few people that come out. Weekends, that's the worst whenever there's the most people, probably about 200 people come out," Granados said, referring to how packed Lea Lake usually is.

Granados has been a lifeguard at Bottomless Lakes for three years. With the recent fish-kill, his duties have changed from making sure people in the lake are safe, to keeping an eye out for dead fish.

"We use a net, put on some gloves, we've got this little trash picker-up and just use that to pick up the fish," Granados said.

A fish kill like this has never happened before in this area. Lifeguards said they noticed something strange when the normal group of fish that used to hang out right next to the dock, weren't there anymore.

Park officials knew this case was more than the occasional dead fish due to the amount showing up on shore.

"We've picked up I know pretty close to 15-hundred dead fish in the lake," said Park superintendent Joe Kasuboski. "We have had some fish kills in some of the other lakes but it was due to golden algae and they knew what that cause was."

But in this case, the cause of the fish-kill at Lea Lake is unclear. Park officials have ruled out golden algae and any type of chemical or pesticide as the cause, mainly because not all of the fish are dying.

"This is only targeting one species of fish in the lake - the sunfish we have here," explained Kasuboski.

Camping and picnic areas surrounding Lea Lake are still open, however, the lake itself will remain closed to swimming until test results can prove that the water is once again safe. Results are expected by the end of the week.

A Queensland estuary groper, estimated to weigh up to 30kg, lies dead on the banks of the Burrum River during the week.


A giant groper has died in the Burrum River, prompting speculation as to why fish are perishing in an apparently healthy waterway.

The stench of decaying fish hangs over sections of the river and stunned barramundi are reportedly being caught by hand as they swim aimlessly in the shallows.

Lifetime local Peter Pearson said he had never seen anything like it in his time living and fishing in the region.

After finding a dead Queensland estuary groper near his Pacific Haven property on Thursday, Mr Pearson said it was time something was done about the problem.

"I would have seen 10 dead barra today," he said.

"And that groper, they are hardy critters, it takes a fair bit to knock one of those around."

After 49 years spent on and around the Burrum, Mr Pearson said the river had always been one of the cleanest in the region.

"We used to test the water monthly, used to send it away for analysis and never found anything wrong with it," he said.

He also dismissed the theory that cold water was responsible for the string of recent fish deaths.

"It's not the water temperature; we've had colder winters than this and fish didn't die, plus there were a lot more barra then.

"I'm worried about it; of course we are worried. We've lived nearby all this time and what's happening is new in our experience."

A spokesperson from the Department of Environment and Resource Management said reports had been made to Wide Bay Water and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI).

"DERM will continue to liaise with those groups and will conduct an investigation as further information becomes available," the spokesperson said.

More dugongs (Dugong dugon) have died in Australia this year than in all of 2010. At least 90 of the marine mammals, close relatives of manatees, have starved to death off the coast of Queensland after floods destroyed the area's sea grass, the dugong's main source of food. Another six were killed by boats or fishing nets. Only 79 dugongs were found dead in that region in 2010.

Sea grass suffers when it is overwhelmed by freshwater. Massive floods in December and January followed by a cyclone in February dumped a lot of river water into the ocean off Queensland. The runoff also brought pesticides and sediment, providing what Queensland Minister for Environment Vicky Darling called a "triple whammy" to the vegetation.

The sea grass problem has also hurt sea turtles in the region. Several hundred dead turtles washed up along the state's northern coast late last month. Experts fear many other bodies drifted away or sank to the bottom and were never observed or counted.

Darling said the sea grass is not likely to recover this year, although it is expected to eventually bounce back. She said the dugongs, aka sea cows, are also expected to recover in time.

Meanwhile, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) has warned the opposite: that dugong and sea turtle deaths in the area are only going to increase. "We're going to see more dugongs and green turtles straying from their regular foraging areas in search of food," GBRMPA chairman Russell Reichelt said in a prepared statement last month. "This makes them more vulnerable to disease and injury or death from other threats that may exist in these unfamiliar territories."

The GBRMPA has put out a series of posters asking boaters to "go slow - look out below" and is asking visitors to report animals observed in unusual locations.

A few of the dead dugongs and turtles (as well as three dolphins) were found in Gladstone Harbor, off the Great Barrier Reef. Two companies - Van Oord and Dredging International - are currently operating a joint venture to dredge the port to enhance operations for the area's liquid natural gas exports. Several conservation groups have opposed, and continue to challenge the project, saying it could cause an ecological disaster for the region's marine life. "Even if the work in this harbor is not directly killing marine animals, it is at least helping to create a situation where they are slowly being forced out of their traditional habitat to die of starvation," Friends of the Earth spokesman Drew Hutton told Australia's 9News.

Dugongs, which can be found throughout coastal Asian and East African waters, are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Alan Friedman sends this report from Buffalo, New York: "The activity on the sun today was so diverse in intensity and character I was reminded of movements in a symphony. This very massive prominence (pictured below) was so very faint--almost invisible when others circling the limb were properly exposed. It's delicate tendrils inspired the name Delicato."

In Falmouth, Maine, photographer John Stetson turned his solar telescope toward sunspot group 1271 and found it seething. "The active region is bright and crackling, surrounded by long, twisting filaments of magnetism that seem poised to produce some powerful flares," he says. Indeed,NOAA analysts note that the sunspot has a "beta-delta-gamma" magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class explosions.
