ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงาน ได้รับแจ้งจากชาวบ้านที่อาศัยโดยรอบคลองคลองละลมโบราณ ทั้ง 6 ลูก ของเทศบาลเมืองบุรีรัมย์ อ.เมือง จ.บุรีรัมย์ ว่า พบเห็นปลาลอยตายเกลื่อนเป็นจำนวนมาก โดยไม่ทราบสาเหตุ และส่งกลิ่นเหม็นคลุ้งไปทั่วบริเวณ ทำให้ชาวบ้านที่อยู่รอบบริเวณคลองละลมได้รับผลกระทบ จึงแจ้งให้เจ้าหน้าที่เทศบาลมาตรวจสอบ
ขณะที่นายสกล ไกรรณภูมิ รองนายกเทศมนตรีเมืองบุรีรัมย์ ได้ลงตรวจสอบ พร้อมกับกล่าวว่า สาเหตุที่ปลาตายเป็นจำนวนมากน่าจะเกิดจากน้ำฝนที่ตกลงมาชะล้าง สารแอมโมเนียที่สะสมอยู่บนถนน ประกอบกับท่อน้ำเสียในเขตเทศบาลเอ่อล้นไหล ลงสู่คลองละลม ทำให้ไนโตรเจนในน้ำสูงกว่าปกติ จนอาจเป็นเหตุทำให้ปลาช็อคตาย หรืออาจจะเกิดจากโรคระบาด ซึ่งพบว่าปลาในคลองละลมได้ทยอยตายไปแล้วหลายพันตัว ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นปลานิล และหอยลอยตายเกลื่อน
อย่างไรก็ตาม เบื้องต้นได้ประสานไปยังสำนักงานประมงจังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ เพื่อมาตรวจสอบสาเหตุปลาตายให้แน่ชัดอีกครั้ง พร้อมทั้งจะได้ส่งตัวอย่างน้ำไปตรวจสอบที่จังหวัดนครราชสีมาด้วยว่า น้ำในคลองละลมโบราณดังกล่าวมีค่าไนโตรเจนสูงเกินมาตรฐานหรือไม่อย่างไร เพื่อจะได้หาแนวทางแก้ไขปัญหาดังกล่าวต่อไป ซึ่งที่ผ่านมา ทางเทศบาลได้มีการตรวจสอบคุณภาพน้ำในคลองละลม ทั้ง 6 ลูก มาอย่างต่อเนื่อง แต่ในช่วงนี้ได้เกิดฝนตกจึงอาจจะทำให้คุณภาพน้ำมีกรด แก๊ส เป็นสีเขียว ตะกอนขุ่น จึงทำให้ปลาเกิดตายได้
รองนายกเทศมนตรีเมืองบุรีรัมย์ ยังได้แจ้งเตือนว่า ไม่ให้ประชาชนลงไปเก็บปลาตายในคลองละลมไปรับประทานเพราะอาจเป็นอันตราย พร้อมทั้งได้สั่งให้เจ้าหน้าที่เทศบาลเร่งเก็บปลาตายนำไปทำลาย เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้เกิดมลภาวะ และให้ทำการตรวจสอบคุณภาพน้ำในคลองละลมโบราณดังกล่าวด้วย

A recent explosion of plankton off the Sonoma Coast has turned lethal for abalone and other shell fish.



White meat from the prized sea snails has been washing up on area beaches for more than a week, sending wafts of rotting flesh over bluffs, and dismaying those who consider themselves stewards of the ocean.


“It's like going up to an old growth forest and then coming back and it's been clear cut,” said Matt Mattison, an abalone diver from Monte Rio, who was stunned by the extent of the die-off near Fort Ross on Monday. “In 28 years of diving up here, I have never seen anything like this.”


State scientists say the destruction appears to be the result of a plankton bloom that began toward the end of August and is now dissipating.


Such red tides are common occurrences, named for the rusty, murky tinge they give the water. The blooms feed on periodic upwellings of nutrient-rich cold water from the ocean's depths.


Generally, the blooms pass without major harm to abalone. But the most recent red tide stuck during a stretch of unusually calm ocean conditions, which kept the plankton densely packed, said Ian Taniguchi, senior biologist with the California Department of Fish and Game


Scientists are awaiting lab results to see if toxins from the concentrated plankton poisoned the abalone as well as the urchins, chitins, sea stars and other animals that have been washing up in unusual numbers.

The Animal Health Trust (AHT), based in Newmarket, is following up reports of dogs suddenly falling ill and dying after being walked in woodlands. The condition, dubbed Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI), has prompted the AHT to issue warnings to dog owners across Suffolk, Nottinghamshire and Norfolk.



Spokesman Richard Newton has said that the AHT was not aware of any cases so far in 2011, but were alerted to a flurry of incidents that occurred at the beginning of September. He added that they were able to pinpoint specific locations as both vets and dog owners had contacted them as soon as their dogs had fallen ill. The symptoms of SCI include lethargy, diarrhoea and vomiting, and dog owners are advised to take them to a vet as soon as they become apparent. Currently, Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire, and Thetford Forest and Sandringham Estate in Norfolk are being studied for clues to the culprit.

Situation:

Southern California has been invaded by hordes of Humboldt squid in recent days, a bizarre onslaught for a deep-sea creature that normally keeps a low profile. The invasion began last week in San Diego, according to GrindTV and the Los Angeles Times, and has since spread as far north as Santa Barbara, with "perhaps millions" swarming offshore and hundreds reportedly washing onto beaches. The Humboldt squid - aka "jumbo squid," but not to be confused with giant squid - also invaded California in 2007, when some as large as 20 to 40 pounds washed ashore, and they showed up again last year. This year's invasion isn't quite as jumbo as those, the Ventura County Star reports, with most of the squid ranging from 5 to 10 pounds, but it's surreal nonetheless. And while surfers and beach-goers marvel at all the red, alien bodies littering the coast, fisherman have been reeling in live ones by the thousands. "They're kind of everywhere, from the shore to the islands and anywhere in between," Hilal Helweh of Channel Islands Sportfishing tells the Star. "I don't know how far north they're going to go," adds Mike Thompson of Ventura Sportsfishing. "It seems like there's a steady stream of them, not one school."

Humboldt squid live in the Eastern Pacific at depths of 660 to 2,300 feet, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo, and normally gravitate south of the equator - they're named after the Humboldt Current, located in their historic habitat off South America's west coast. Recently, though, they've been venturing farther and farther into the Northern Hemisphere, periodically swarming around California and even as far north as Sitka, Alaska. This, according to the Smithsonian Zoo, is "raising alarm about ecological problems possibly underlying the northward migration." What kind of ecological problems? Scientists aren't sure, because Humboldt squid are so elusive and mysterious that little is known about their biology or behavior. Their eggs have never been observed in the wild, for example, and we don't even have an estimate of their global population size. But because the northerly invasions are so unusual for these reclusive creatures, many experts believe some kind of environmental change has triggered the behavior. From the Smithsonian: "Some oceanographers suggest that warming oceans are at fault, while others speculate that declining numbers of the squid's predators due to overfishing may have allowed Humboldts to expand their range." Scientists have also floated the possibility that these migrations are spurred by El Niño-related shifts in ocean currents, and may even represent "an attempt at permanent colonization," GrindTV notes.

What is clear is that the squid make themselves at home while vacationing up north, feasting on a wide array of native fish - many of which are likely inexperienced in evading jumbo squid. Humboldts grow up to 6 feet long and can gain 100 pounds in a year, requiring voracious appetites that experts worry will cause long-term damage to West Coast fisheries. Still, many fishermen don't seem to mind the occasional invasion for now, as long as they can catch palatable squid in place of lost fish. One angler tells the Ventura County Star this year's swarm makes for better eating than in '07. "The better thing is the taste," says Helweh of Channel Islands Sportfishing. "[In 2007], they were so big they tasted horrible. They were not table fare. These taste a lot better." The Humboldts can vanish as suddenly as they appear, however, so anyone hoping to capitalize on this year's invasion better hurry. According to the Redondo Beach Patch outlet, the squid have already disappeared from around Long Beach. "Thousands, maybe millions here one day and then gone the next," says skipper Andy Siratt of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing.

Dead bee mystery has state officials buzzing



MALABAR -- Millions of dead bees mysterious turn up in the southern part of Brevard County.


Officials with the Department of Agriculture are trying to figure out what caused them to die. They have gathered samples of the dead bees and send them to the state lab to be tested.


Officials with the state told News 13 over the phone that it appears some type of aerial application of a pesticide might have been sprayed on the area. However, they said it is too early in the investigation to know for sure.


Two beekeepers were affected and this mystery is a huge loss for both of them.


Fellsmere beekeeper Charles Smith said the dead bees were supposed to be bound for California to help pollinate almond trees.
Charles Smith is the owner of the Smith Family Honey Company. He was been involved in the beekeeping industry for 32 years and said this recent loss is devastating.
"I'm a pretty tough guy but it is heart wrenching and not only is it a monetary loss here but we work really hard on these bees to keep them in good health and to grow bees more and more for other beekeepers to buy from us and travel the country and pollinate several crops," Smith said.
He said his bees pollinate cranberry and almond tress all over the country and are used to make honey.
On Monday, Smith came out to check on his bees and discovered they were dead or in the process dying. He said he sent his sons to scope out surrounding areas to see if other locations were having problems.
He thinks some kind of chemical was sprayed on his bees. But he said he will not point the finger at anyone until he has all the facts and test results.
There should be a better understanding of what happened once the tests determine what type of chemical, if any, killed the bees.
Smith said there is a total of six separate locations where dead bees cover the ground. The areas are all located within a few square miles -- two miles west of Babcock Street and 1.5 miles in each direction of Deer Run Road in Malabar.
"All the agencies need to be careful of what we spray,” Smith said. “Farmers need to be careful of what we spray and look out for this."
Smith said his hives usually hold anywhere between 10,000 to 15,000 bees.
There were roughly 800 hives affected between the two beekeepers.
Smith said it is at least a $150,000 loss, which is a major setback.
He said he will work to recover his loss and figure out who is responsible.
"To be wiped out like this unintentionally, we don't need to have this happened," Smith said.
Test results are expected back within the next few weeks.

The ants were discovered by workers dealing with another invasive species, the coconut rhinoceros beetle, Ross Miller of the University of Guam said. The ants were found at a landfill so experts are unsure what part of Guam they came from. The identification of the ants as Wasmannia auropunctata was made by experts at the University of Hawaii, which has also been invaded. Brown tree snakes, which biologists think hitchhiked to Guam on planes and boats during World War II, have wiped out many of the native bird species. Miller said the ants could have an even bigger effect. He said they are found in the ground and in trees and on plants, devouring insects and small mammals, reptiles and bird chicks in their path.
