SPECTACULAR EXPLOSION (UPDATED): Magnetic fields on the sun's northeastern limb erupted around 17:45 UT on April 16th, producing one of the most visually-spectacular explosions in years. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths:​

The explosion, which registered M1.7 on the Richter Scale of solar flares, was not Earth-directed, but it did hurl a CME into space. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have analyzed the trajectory of the cloud and found that it will hit NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft, the Spitzer space telescope, and the [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E99YYNN9EGQ"]rover Curiosity[/ame] en route to Mars. According to STEREO/COR2 data now available, the CME reported in
today's daily bulletin (marked by dimmings and a post-eruptive arcade on
SWAP data starting at 08:30 UT) was directed mostly towards the north,
but it has a component on the ecliptic plane and it can thus arrive to
the Earth. SOHO/LASCO data is not available (data gap between 06:24 UT
and 13:25 UT). Preliminary calculations using COR2 data give an
estimated speed of 400 km/s, this is a slow CME, with a possible arrival
time to the Earth late on April 18 or early on April 19.

Early Thursday morning a 6.9 magnitude quake hit in the Gulf of California. (see EQ list below) This is no doubt in relation to the series of quakes along the ring-of-fire which begun in the Indian Ocean near Sumatra with an 8.6 quake on April 11th.

Later that day, some fourteen hours later, the rift found its way to the US Northwest off the coast of Oregon. Then fourteen "minutes" later, Mexico was hit with a 7.0 near Michoacan. The rift continues hitting the Gulf of Calif. with a 6.9 mag. quake seventeen hours after Mexico.

Note: A point of interest is there was a "foreshock" of 6.2 nine hours prior to the larger 6.9. This is an event I look for when assessing mega-quakes which could occur at subduction zones.

Another point of interest - is rare quake events which have occurred in Utah and Oklahoma. Regarding Utah; there are some seismologists who believe there is a connection between the Cascadia Subduction Zone - Utah and Yellowstone Caldera. Yellowstone - Earthquakes and Volcanoes​

An international team of researchers, including two scientists from the University of Rochester, have been studying the location and behavior of magma chambers on the Earth's mid-ocean ridge system which is a vast chain of volcanoes along which the Earth forms new crust.
​

​

​

Two new studies into the "plumbing systems" that lie under volcanoes could bring scientists closer to understanding plate ruptures and predicting eruptions - both of which are important steps for protecting the public from earthquake and volcanic hazards.
​

​

​

​

In an extensive study of eruptions, researchers identified multiple magma chambers positioned horizontally and vertically, allowing magma to shoot in several directions. Earthquake patterns were used to track the migrating magma as it inflated cracks, and to map the rupture of faults above the miles of propagating magma injection zones. The combined data sets show that separate magma chambers fed single eruptions.

This could be the smoking gun which connects the US west coast with Utah and on to Yellowstone.

Sumatra - Cascadia - Puerto Rico Subduction Zones​

Just as with the Sumatra Subduction Zone, the Cascadia and Puerto Rico zones are prone to large mega-quakes which could reach into the 9+ magnitudes. I have presented historical data along with recent studies of Cascadia, now I will present historical and current facts about the Puerto Rico zone.

​

​

A dozen major earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have occurred in the Caribbean near Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, in the past 500 years, and several have generated tsunamis. The most recent major earthquake, a magnitude 8.1 in 1946, resulted in a tsunami that killed a reported 1,600 people.

With nearly twenty million people now living in this tourist region and a major earthquake occurring on average every 50 years, scientists say it is not a question of if it will happen but when. They are calling for the establishment of tsunami early warning systems in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, and better public education about the real tsunami threats in these regions.

The Puerto Rico Trench, which is capable of producing mega-quakes of magnitude 8 or greater, faces north and east into the Atlantic Ocean. There are few land areas or islands to block a tsunami generated near the Puerto Rico Trench from entering the Atlantic Ocean. The United States East Coast has a high risk of suffering a direct hit from a tsunami 'surge' or 10 story foot waves.

Within the last week, we have observed several large earthquakes around the ring-of-fire; three volcanoes have elevated their alerts to "warning" or color code "orange"; and a string of devastating tornadoes. Why?
​

New research identifies a steady stream of charged particles have been flowing from the Sun. This is in addition to the escalation of solar flares and CMEs (coronal mass ejections) we have witnessed over the past few weeks. No surprise to the M,C,B-class flares and CMEs which often follow. This is expected as part of Cycle 24's drive to solar maximum.

What is new - is the observation of a steady stream of solar wind (charged particles) flowing from the Sun. They are coming from coronal holes and newly described 'filament'. The cause of what appears to be a new addition to solar cycles in the way of a steady stream is undetermined.

I will now inject my hypothesis: I suggest it is related to our galaxy 'Milky Way'. Something is changing and we can see it in our neighboring planets and celestial orbs such as asteroid, comets and bolides.
​

​

​

​

I further suggest - the waves of charged particles hitting Earth's magnetic field, is both affecting Earth's atmosphere and Earth's core. As a result, shifting jet streams and ocean currents cause extreme weather. I believe it is the effect on Earth's core which is causing a slight shift in the mantle, which in-turn has an effect on tectonic plates.​

In the video above which occurred earlier today, you will see the looping of charged particles coming from the Sun. My hypothesis suggests similar loops occur away from the Sun - perhaps in all parts of our Galaxy.

Released today in a new research study suggests that charged particles in a magnetic field can escape into infinity without ever stopping. One of the conditions is that the field is generated by current loops situated on the same plane. I believe something is happening in our galaxy which is causing magnetic fields to 'loop' or spiral - not only related to the Sun, but to all celestial bodies.

Current Solar Activity​

A few CMEs have blasted off over the last four days. An M-class flare and some C-class flares were observed during the past 24 hours. We expect active conditions with C-class and M-class flares possible, with largest activity coming from sunspot region 1459. ​

An M1.7 flare was observed by GOES on April 16, peaking at 17:40 UT. The flare originated from an active region 1459 which crossing the east limb today coming towards meridian center. The accompanying CME propagated with the speed of about 1300 km/s.

Using data from SDO, Steele Hill of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center assembled a must-see movie of the event. It shows the explosion unfolding at 304Å, a wavelength which traces plasma with a temperature around 80,000 K.​

Coverage of the blast was not limited to space telescopes. Amateur astronomers saw it, too. Jim Lafferty sends this picture from his backyard observatory in Redlands, California:​

"Yesterday's prominence on the sun's eastern limb was was one of the largest in years---short lived, it was mostly gone in a few hours," says Lafferty. "It was a wonderful sight in the eyepiece and in the camera!"

M-Class Solar Flare / Spectacular Eruption
The returning region off the northeast limb looks to be providing us with some Solar Fireworks. A massive eruption that registered as an M1.7 event, peaked at 17:45 UTC on Monday afternoon. Due to the location of this event, the CME plasma cloud generated was not directed towards Earth..

Solar Update



Solar activity increased to moderate levels with an M1.7 flare detected around the returning active region off the northeast limb. An impressive plasma eruption resulted, but does not look to be Earth directed. This returning sunspot should be numbered 1461 on Tuesday. A new region now numbered 1460 continues to form in the northern hemisphere to the north of where fading AR1458 once was. Sunspot 1459 located in the southeast quadrant remains a sprawling sunspot cluster, but is not magnetically complex. Elsewhere, existing sunspot 1455 is approaching the western limb and will soon begin to rotate out of direct Earth view. There will remain a chance for C-Class flares on Tuesday and perhaps an isolated M-Class event.
